Stereoselective Synthesis of Natural Products, Development of Novel Asymmetric Reactions

(Tomoyuki Esumi)
We are developing methods to synthesize natural organic compounds and their derivatives with complex or unique structures in a short number of steps, with high yields, stereoselectivity, and at low cost. In the process, we review the reaction conditions and synthetic routes of steps that do not work, but sometimes it still does not work. However, hitting such a wall gives rise to new ideas and starts a new challenge of developing new reactions. In addition, the biological activity of many natural organic compounds has not been investigated much, and they are not considered to be candidates for pharmaceuticals. We believe that all compounds have some wonderful activity (talent). Therefore, we have the biological activity of our synthetic products examined in various biological laboratories. We find the talents of unused compounds that have not been noticed as pharmaceutical candidates, polish them up, and turn them into pharmaceuticals. I would like to be able to do such research.
